The YMCA Infant to Preschool Child Care Center

Also known as “Bright Beginnings Children’s Center,” we are a not-for-profit corporation designed to meet your child’s needs during his or her first social experience away from home. Our early childhood program provides a warm and supportive learning environment for infants, toddlers, preschool, and pre-kindergarten children year round. In addition, we offer a summer school program for children 5-10 years old.

Early Childhood Education

We use a creative curriculum framework, Ages and Stages and Core Body of Knowledge to facilitate learning and child development. Our center offers a caring and nurturing environment that will challenge your child’s imagination and creativity. Our curriculum includes:

• Music
• Art
• Dramatic Play
• Science
• Gym
• Cooking
• Manipulatives
• Fine and Gross Motor Skills
• Field Trips

Swim lesson once a week at the Plattsburgh YMCA. Transportation is provided by the YMCA’s bus with integrated car seats.

Additional classes for Pre-Kindergarten include cooking and sign language.

Our Classrooms

You will find 6 spacious rooms that meet each age group’s developmental needs. Four of the classrooms have age appropriate bathrooms, and each room is divided into interest areas that promote imagination and creativity. The center also offers 4 separate, age appropriate and fenced in playgrounds, each with toys and equipment for climbing, running, riding bikes and creative play. When the weather does not cooperate, we have a large “Big Room” for gross motor skill activities.

Our Staff

All staff must have a state clearance, finger print check and reference checks in order to be a child care provider, in addition to completing 30 training hours pertaining to the principles of childhood development, nutrition and health, child abuse and prevention. They are CPR and First Aid certified, as well.

Our staff prepares developmentally appropriate activities, both teacher and child directed, as part of the program’s daily schedule and curriculum.

Gym and Swim

Gym class starts in the fall and runs through spring, an opportunity for children 18 months through pre-kindergarten to participate in exercise, dance and play group activities.

The class meets once per week in the “Big Room” and focuses on listening, following directions, hand-to-eye coordination, movement to music. and small and large muscle development. Pre-school children ages 3-5 years enjoy a bus ride with their teachers to the Y once a week for swimming lessons. Our goal is to help your child become comfortable in the water and encourage them to become independent enough to try some swimming skills. Swim lessons are taught by the Y certified Aquatic Staff. An observation area is located up on the first floor for parents who wish to observe.

Play Time

In addition to 6 spacious classrooms, the center has a “Big Room” for play, gym class and gross motor skills activities. This room is particularly useful during the cold winter months. In the classrooms, Dramatic Play is the most used interest area, where kids and their teachers enjoy interacting with one another.

The Block Area is another place that challenges children’s imagination and creativity. The center has 4 separate, spacious and enclosed playgrounds with age appropriate equipment for climbing, as well as areas for riding bikes and running.

Nutrition

Our center participates in the Child and Adult Food program, provided through the New York State Health Department. The kitchen management staff prepare and serve three nutritious meals a day, and all meals are included in the tuition. We follow a four week menu cycle in compliance with the NY state regulatory guidelines and our center has been recognized by the state for offering kids a varied menu with frequent servings of fresh fruit and vegetables, even during the winter months.

Tuition

There is a $50 non-refundable registration fee to enroll in the program. Tuition is due every other Monday for the following two weeks, regardless of whether or not the child attends. We offer a 10% discount for the oldest child.
