Senior Fitness

Gym and Swim
The YMCA’s Senior Fitness Program is designed to meet the needs of active older adults over 60 years of age who like to participate in-group exercises. A doctor’s medical recommendation is requested and the program is controlled according to the individual’s capabilities and limitations. The full program consists of four hours per week in the gym and one hour in the pool for exercise, recreational swimming and instruction (if desired). All people 60 & older are welcome to come to these classes led by Senior Fitness Instructors. Gym classes are 8:30 - 9:30 am (M - Th) and swimming in the YMCA pool every Wednesday from 2:00 - 3:00 pm. The program is free to YMCA members. A donation per class is requested from all non-members. Funding is provided by the Clinton County Office for the Aging (OFA) and the balance is subsidized by the YMCA.

New! Shuffleboard
The YMCA in collaboration with the Office of the Aging and the Senior Council has started shuffleboard at the Senior Center on N. Catherine St. in Plattsburgh. Shuffleboard games are held Mon. & Wed, mornings from 10:00 am - 11:30 am. Contributions are accepted.

Social Activities
The senior citizens program at the YMCA offers a variety of opportunities for social interaction and fun. Activities such as picnics, line dancing, and walks are planned and offered to seniors. Also included in the social activities are day trips to Montreal, Burlington, & Lake Placid/Saranac Lake. Longer (3-4 day) trips are also taken to the Empire State Senior Games. We are open to suggestions for other day trips.

Senior Splash
Senior splash is targeted for those persons over 60 years of age and is totally subsidized for YMCA members. Non-members pay $3 per class or 5 splash passes for $12.50. This class gives you the opportunity to have fun and meet new people during free swim time. You’ll enjoy the therapeutic effects of the warm water and exercise.

Aquacise
The Aquacise program provides the participants the opportunity to do gentle activity in warm water. Under the leadership of trained personnel, the participants will move all joints to their full range of motion. Time will be spent on muscle toning, mild cardiovascular exercise and stretching. The program is held 4 days a week M-TH. It is not necessary to know how to swim. This group has monthly luncheons at area restaurants.
